Continuing Rancupid’s East Java exploration story. Around 9:30 am Rancupid team delivered the trip participants to their homestay. Don’t forget Rancupid team said that we would pick the participants up at 12  oclock at night. Yes mid night.. Because we have to go to the Ijen Crater at night so we can see the blue fire before the sunrise.

At 2 am we arrived at Paltuding Post at the foot of Mount Ijen. Rancpid and team were very sleepy but we have to got out the car. The air at the foot of mountain was very cold. We advised the the participants to rent respiratory mask (mask to prevent sulfur poisoning). Before climbing the mountain, Rancupid’s leader said to the participants that we would guarded by two experienced tour guide. One in front and one other behind. Be careful for climbers who have heart disease and asthma. Better didn’t force to hike if you have kind of that health condition. Make sure for use hiking shoes and confortable clothes. Rancupid has some tips before begin hiking, pack cookies, water and tissues in your backpack. The trekking of Ijen crater was pretty hardcore. As remainder, it was 60 degree slopes.

Before climb, we all prayed first and the journey began. We can walk slowly to save energy. Mount Ijen is an active volcano. It’s located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency, East Java. The mountain that erupted in 1999, it height is 2,443 MDPL (Meters Abouve Sea Level) and located side by side with Mount Merapi.

Hiking Ijen mountain divide into 3 stages. The first 1 km of hike Ijen crater was quite gentle. The next 1 km of Ijen crater was very steep. The last 1 km of Ijen crater between sloping and steep. In participant opinion, the most tiring was at the beginning of 1 km.

Finally Rancupid and team arrived at the top of Mount Ijen. We need to hike 900 meters into the crater to see the blue flames spitting out of the ground. The blue flames of Ijen crater only can be seen at night. Or due to the combustion of sulfuric gases in contact with the air at temperatures above 360 centigrade. Blue flame is not blue lava, it’s sulphur. We could smell it. Although you may have heard its blue lava, it’s not. It’s Sulphur. Duh- you can smell it! The track going down into Ijen crater was not like the track going to the top. It was basically a pile of loose rocks that must carefully walk down. Its even more difficult because at this point, Rancupid and team would be exhausted. After we have got a good view, picture and video of blue flames, we ready to hike back up to the top for sunrise.

Rancupid and team would be stunned when we catch the first light of the highly toxic, yet the beautiful blue lake which be all woth it. There were a few places to catch sunrise. Sunrise is basically all the same amazing view. We could get the best angle and relax and also rest while wait the sunrise.

After got fill of beautiful view of Ijen Crater, it was time to head back down the trail. At thiat point we were most than exhausted. We enjoyed the various colour of skyline, volcanos and lush greenery.
